The Games took place from August 23 to September 6 at the Mohamed Boudiaf Olympic Complex and at the Stade du 5 Juillet which was inaugurated on 17 June 1972. The events took place with the participation of 2,444 athletes including 349 women from 15 countries; athletes competed in 18 sports disciplines whereas 499 medals awarded. Italy was once again in the first place in the medal table with 127 podiums; Italy led the ranking which included 13 countries in total. Only Monaco and Malta did not win any medals, but it must be noted that these two nations had the smallest number of participants. Yugoslavia and Italy stood out by winning numerous titles in athletics and future Olympic champions, such as Pietro Mennea and Sara Simeoni, left their mark. The same was true for the Frenchman Henri Boerio who won four gold medals and one silver in gymnastics. As regards the organising country, which finished eighth in the medal table with 20 podiums, the football team won the gold medal which, in the eyes of Algerians, was the most important of all awarded during these Games. The team, managed by Rachid Mekhloufi, the former star of Saint Etienne, dominated over France in the final.
