  • The Games took place from September 15 to 29, notably at the Polje stadium and approximately 2,408 athletes, including 399 women, from 14 countries participated in these Games where 595 medals were awarded in 25 sports disciplines. It goes without saying that Yugoslavia, the organising country, lined up the largest delegation with 409 athletes. It was also Yugoslavia that finished first in the medal table with 127 podiums… behind France (129) and Italy (159), but with the most gold medals (56) while France (55) and Italy (49) had less. A large number of future and former Olympic champions stood out at the Split facilities, however it was the Italian swimmer Cinzia Savi Scarponi who particularly shone with her four titles, but also the French gymnast Michel Boutard who completed his collection of titles and medals started in Algiers four years earlier, counting 13 medals in total including seven titles. Yugoslavia was also at the top with its six titles in team sports, also counting the eleven titles in wrestling and eight titles in boxing. There is no doubt that this competition was very successful for the organising country.
