The Games took place between September 11 and 25 with the participation of 18 nations and 1,996 athletes, including 467 women. The big surprise came from the Syrian delegation, namely the organising country, which was composed of 72 women (that is to say the second strongest female presence in the Games behind Italy with 88 women)… Four years later, there were no Syrian women at the Athens Games. For the first time, Albania and San Marino participated in the events with 33 and 30 representatives respectively. Once again it was Italy that won the team ranking, or rather crushed it with 151 podiums, but above all 51 gold medals more than the runner-up country of Yugoslavia (68 against 17). The organising country, Syria, did well with 27 medals, including 9 titles, while Libya, Malta and Monaco did not win any medals. Moroccan athletics shone with six medals, while Said Aouita attempted a kind of feat by trying to win the 1500m, 5000m and 3000m steeple, but after winning the first two, he found the Italian Alessandro Lambruschini halting his advance. The five titles of the Italian swimmer Giorgio Lamberti and the four gold medals of his compatriot Tanya Vannini should also be noted.
