After Africa and Europe, it was the turn of the Asian continent to organise this third edition of the Mediterranean Games between 11 and 23 October, with a sharp decline in participation since only 792 athletes showed up in Lebanon. The countries that largely sent athletes in Barcelona, had a significantly reduced presence. Spain (83), France (66), and Italy (55) sent symbolic delegations. On the other hand, the United Arab Republic was present with 162 athletes. France came first in the medal table with 69 medals, which showed that the small “tricolore” delegation was made up of medallists only. It is indeed very rare in a tournament to end up with more medals than competing athletes. France was particularly famous for its athletics competitions, the UAR for its gymnastics and weightlifting athletes and Turkey for its wrestling contenders. The United Arab Republic stood out by finishing second in the medal table with 74 athletes taking the podium, however this union of countries would cease to exist after two years.
